Purchasing a plot entails significant investment, especially if the plot is located in an urban area. Therefore, before finalizing the deal, buyers pore through many details about the property, including the current price in relation to prices in the area, paperwork, and the presence of relevant approvals. Many Indians also look at the shape of the plot from the lens of Vastu Shastra.

Vastu Shastra, which translates to ‘Science of Architecture’, comprises a body of texts on the traditional Indian system of architecture. These written works elucidate the ideologies regarding layout, measurements, space arrangement, spatial geometry, design, and ground preparation for residential and commercial properties. Vastu Shastra constitutes the textual portion of Vastu Vidya, which encapsulates the wider information base about design and architectural concepts emanating from prehistoric India.

The two primary plot shapes that are considered auspicious as per the principles of Vastu Shastra are Gaumukhi and Shermukhi.

Vastu Shastra, which details the ancient Indian architectural system, accords much importance to the shape of a plot, apart from various other factors. Accordingly, Gaumukhi and Shermukhi are the two commonly known purpose-oriented plot shapes as per Vastu Shastra. Both plot shapes have specific characteristics that must be present to provide the benefits on a monetary, mental, and spiritual level.

Gaumukhi or cow-faced plots

These land parcels are narrow at the front and broad at the rear. However, a vital requirement is that the broad portion of the plot should extend towards the north-east direction while the main access road should be in the western or the southern direction. The plot’s narrow part should not be towards the northeast direction since that is believed to be inauspicious.

Also, a Gaumukhi plot should not have the narrow part towards the east with a road in front of that part. Ideally, the narrow portion of the land parcel should be towards the west or the south.

As per Vastu Shastra principles, Gaumukhi plots are best suited for residential purposes. The reason behind the belief is that the plot shape symbolises the shape of a cow’s face, and this animal holds significant spiritual and religious importance in Hinduism. Such plots are not considered appropriate for commercial purposes.

Shermukhi or lion-faced plots

Plots that are broad in the front and narrower at the rear are considered to be Shermukhi plots. The broader portion of the plot has to be north-facing, and the primary access road should be on the northern or eastern side. These plots are the exact opposite of Gaumukhi plots.

Such plots are believed appropriate for commercial purposes since the shape symbolises a lion’s face. Lions are known for power, efficiency, and control. It is thought that commercial complexes built on Shermukhi plots do well in terms of revenue and profit generation.

Overall, Gaumukhi and Shermukhi are the two plot shapes defined by Vastu Shastra that most Indians are aware of. Suppose the rules regarding the directions of the plot’s layout and its purpose are followed stringently. In that case, individuals, families, or companies (in Shermukhi plots) may get benefits such as mental wellbeing and financial prosperity on a long-term basis.
